I have never ever had a problem using Epson Salt. There are a variety of substances I have tried to boost M G levels such as High MG Dolemitic lime(be careful not to get one high in lead), K-Mag also known as Langbeinite, and granular kelp (to name a few). Magnesium Sulphate takes the prize. I have never used it with any negative side effects. I use it in two ways, as a soil amendment, and added to every compost tea I blend.
I've been using it in my soil for 2 years now with zero MG issues. I've been using it in my compost teas (about 1 teaspoon per 2 gallons) with zero issues.

Buy it from a pharmacy etc. you will get 2kgs for around $7.00, maybe less if it's on sale. Plants also need sulphur in bloom so it's a double whammy.
Even though I mulch with shredded cedar to help lower PH, I can't, for the life of me, understand why people use the high dolemitic lime, when it brings up the PH. That being said, calcium is plentiful from a variety of other sources.

    Good luck farming.
