    Default Genetics vs. Environment

Some say you can improve the ratio of females to males by providing a proper environment for your plants, and my experiences (old though they be) seem to bear this out. However, genetics would indicate that the male-female lottery is won or lost long before a seed sprouts.

I know that stress can cause hormonal shifts that will turn a female into a hermie, but isn't a male genetic plant going to be male no matter what you do?

You could spray it with ethephon to force female flowers if you wanted to reverse it in the event that it happened to be a spectacular breeding stud and you wanted S1s for a backup.

The Soviets apparently did testing with planting depth but you would be correct to guess that at least most of the gender is genetic and not an environmental choice, stress induced hermies exempted.

    Genetics vs Enviroment

If a female plant is left to flower beyond its normal flowering time, it may produce male flowers for pollen. Self preservation.
A genetic trait (?) that is influenced by enviroment ?
If the enviroment influenced the female plant to do this
cannot the enviroment influence the seed ?
    A genetic trait?

Hermies are *not* males. They're hormone-imbalanced females. Genetically, some strains and lineages are more prone to producing those hormonal imbalances due to stress than others, but yes, all females can be *forced* to hermie.

The point is rather that you can't "increase the number of females" through a good environment; all you can do is reduce the number of hermies.

The only reason I posted the question was some uncertainty in my own mind about whether plants rely on X/Y chromosomes for male-female distinction or not. I couldn't remember whether that applied to plants or only animals.

Monoecious plants are of one gender, and that gender is neither male nor female.

    Or is it both?

    The question! (?)

Its amazing how this plant can be grown in so many ways and influencing the plant can result in the outcome. It was a question regarding if one could influence the sex of it's humble beginning's.
