    Default Congratulations To T&G

Sure I was there via email to egg him on, but last week our very own T&G managed to dig out the reinstall discs for his infected PC and start over factory fresh before anyone else could get to the computer.

Keep in mind this was after telling me he wasn't sure he'd be able to install an antivirus program.

    *sigh*

Seeing as T had so much good luck with his repairs, I figured I'd bite the bullet and upgrade my Ubuntu Linux system to the latest 13.x release.

First I had to update to 12.10, which went fine, but took over six hours.

Then I started the 13.04 upgrade. However, I ignored the warnings and kept my browser open to keep myself entertained while it ran.

Well, that was a mistake. It caused the upgrade process to crash and burn.

So I'm now at a command line prompt repairing the damage. I haven't been at the command line with a Linux system in a lot of years. Not that I'm worried about what to do, it's just that I haven't *needed* to drop to the command line in so long because it's been stable.

But it is a good thing I bought the windows laptop last year -- it's letting me surf for the details on what to do to recover the system. I can't do that from the recovery command line.

This could be a loooooonnnnnggggg night.

Fortunately all I had to do to repair the system is follow the instructions for doing a command-line/server release upgrade from the recovery console/single-user root session. It took a few hours, but it was painless.

    *whew*

What a relief -- I was afraid I was going to have to do a reinstall and risk losing data. Not to mention the fact that a full install takes me over a day because of all the extra software that has to be downloaded, installed, and configured.

I do not fail -- I succeed at finding out what does not work.
