    Default Worm bin aka Vermicomposting

    Hello all,

I spent the better part of the day doing up a worm bin. I've never done this before (compost yes, worm bin no) but I did some researching. I wound up using leaf litter that had been soaking in rain water that collected overtop of a pond that I closed down for the winter. I added a mixture of gritty top soil, then some dolemite lime(worms need ca), pyraphyllite clay(mono/ortho silicates), and a bit of molasses(apparently they need carbs during mating). mixed it all up and that is my intended bedding *nice and moist*

Any insights would be helpful, I'll be using 2 40Litre bins, one that is highly ventillated where the action takes place, and one below to catch the liquids; and roughly 1 lb of adult/juvenile/cocoons of red wrigglers.

    thanks in advance,

    cheers,

p.s. first dose of food is going to be some cantaloupe, bananas, cucumbers, and some coffee grinds.

    Default You will be pleased

    Hello Midnight Toker,
My worm bin is made of (2)30 gallon plastic bins stacked together (basic internet constructed one) and is a little over 9 months old. The bin is so active and thriving, it's awesome. There is no comparing store bought EWC to homemade vermicompost, you are going to be very pleased. I used to brew teas with store bought EWC and thought I was doing good, but with homemade vermi-compost, for me it was like the first time the tea was actually alive with microbial life. I follow a pretty strict diet for my worms consisting of high quality waste products, basic good stuff in equals good stuff out philosophy. Scrap salad greens, ground eggs shells, used coffee grounds (dried out a bit) alfalfa meal, Bokashi bran and Bokashi compost, non toxic shredded paper, Azomite, kelp meal all make for a pretty good diet. I will stop now I can go on forever talking about vermicompost. Happy composting MT!

Hey Herb, i constantly hear people adding azomite and I wasn't sure precisely why it benefitted the worms. I figured it would be for silica/trace and my pyrophyllite would cover it, any idea?

Yes I have come to the realization that I have to ferment my own plant nutrients, produce the humus I need, and creat my own hydrolized fish emulsion, because nothing put into a bottle compares. The only thing that I would mention is that the bug poo produt by GBT is very good as an accelerant, Doctor Mike wouldn't reveal just what enzymes are in the maggot fly castings but they break stuff down asap.

I was aerating my bins and found worms still going so I added in some kelp meal as a snack, I don't really have enough going in there to support them all.

    Default Worm farmer

    Hello Mt,
Yes I add the Azomite for the trace elements, I would assume that any rock dust will do, i.e. brown rock, soft rock phosphate, pyrophyllite etc. I only add maybe a tablespoon or so whenever I get the urge maybe once a month I give it a dusting. I love to add a dozen egg shells ground into powder every so often, I read that he calcium levels are terrific for the worms. As far as fermented compost goes look into Bokashi it is truly amazing, You can turn a 5 gallon bucket of kitchen waste into usable compost in 10 weeks. Here is a great link for making your own lacto B (Em-1) the first step for Bokashi bran http://www.hawaiihealingtree.org/?p=163 I followed this recipe and made great Lacto B the first attempt. And shortly after that I made Bokashi Bran that turned out top notch. As far as making 30 gallons of vermicompost every 3 months I would consider that pretty aggressive especially for a smaller bin, of course I am a bit more conservative in my feeding and bin harvesting but boy can those worms eat.

hm, never noticed anything to the contrary, but my worm juice stinks! I had to dump the bin of juice today and hopefully that'll get rid of the smell. it smells like putrid melons and milk, i dunno why it smells like milk because I have only added banana peels, cucumbers, and cantaloupe.

    Default stinky bin help

    MT,
I try to avoid high water content waste like melons, cucumber and tomatoes and the like. I find they saturate the bin and create an anaerobic muddy medium for the worms deep below. I also avoid citrus rinds, onions (pew), avocado (they don't breakdown) and hot peppers. Cracking the lid and letting the bin breath from time to time helps with the stagnation and smell issues. I also like to add shredded paper from my office shredder at work non toxic ink only, my $.02.

Is that for real 10 years, wow! if so I will give up on the two skins that have been in there for 9 months with no breakdown whatsoever. I have a large pale sprout that will not die, its like a mutant plant in my bin and I am pretty sure it was the pit from the avocado LOL.

I generally stir my compost bins to aerate and re-blend the mix because the water tends to work to the bottom which gets soggy and sulphur eating anaerobic bacteria take over leading to the sewer aroma we all know and don't love.

Oxygen is key to a rapid breakdown.
